The Most Awarded All – Missouri Winery

NOTICE: COVID-19 Impact

NOTICE: COVID-19

UPDATED 3/18/20

For the past few weeks, we have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and making changes around the edges of our business. More frequent hand-washing, frequent use of disinfectants on tables, doors, and bar tops.

Following the advice of the CDC and Governor Parson, we’ll be taking further measures here at the winery. Here’s what you need to know if you’re visiting us in the coming days:

  1. Our weekend entertainment is cancelled until April 18th.
  2. No seating will be available through April 17th.
  3. No tasting through April 17th.
  4. Orders (of any quantity) can still be placed at our at our curbside pick up area.

You can check out our Wine List here

We’ve set up curbside pick up for those who wish to remain in their vehicle. Here’s how to order for pickup:

  1. Drive to the winery as usual during regular business hours (see below).
  2. Park in front of our pavilion.
  3. Call us at (636) 433-2245. We’ll take your order and payment information over the phone.
  4. We’ll run your order down to your vehicle.

In addition, for now, we’ll be offering FREE DELIVERY of 12 or more bottles to customers in Franklin, Warren, St. Charles, and St. Louis counties, and the city of St. Louis. To qualify for the free delivery, you must place your order via phone (636) 433-2245. Missouri residents outside of these 4 counties are encouraged to place orders via phone rather than online (we’re offering discounted shipping – our online ordering system does not allow us to do this).

We can ship to many states through our website – shipping outside of Missouri must be done online (the service we use handles all compliance with various state regulations).

We continue to remain open with our regular business hours:

Monday-Thursday: 10:30 am – 5:30 pm

Friday: 10:30 am – 7 pm

Saturday: 10:30 am – 5:30 pm

Sunday: Noon – 5:30 pm

Lastly, as a small, family farm winery your support means everything to us. We cannot continue to do what we love without that support. This is going to be a tough time for a lot of small, local businesses. We encourage you to support family-run businesses (not just ours) if you’re able to.

Please call us if you have any questions or concerns. Our number is (636) 433-2245.

Sincerely,

Mark Blumenberg, Eric Blumenberg, and the “BluCrew” at Blumenhof Winery

A Grand BARGAIN

As you must have heard, they say we’re a nation divided.  (You may well ask, who are “they” and why are we listening to them?  Aren’t they just politicians and pundits who have a vested interest in sowing discord?  Well, never mind.)  At Blumenhof, we don’t see things that way.  Of course, we have problems, but we believe those problems can be solved—and wine is indisputably a

Many seemingly insoluble issues may be addressed by researching our Holiday Wine List, which details an array of award-winning solutions, from dry to sweet, that are also fiscally responsible.  You can choose to

40 YEARS OLD and still WINE GROWING

In April 1979, Blumenhof began planting its first three acres of wine grapes on a ridge overlooking the Missouri River Valley. For the past 40 years, 3 generations of the Blumenberg family have been hanging out in the vines with the sole aim of producing the highest-quality MISSOURI-GROWN WINES. Of course, we weren’t the only ones who were hung up on this quixotic venture. It is only because of YOU, our steadfast customers (and enablers), that Blumenhof has been able to hang in there all these years. CHEERS!

SAVING CHRISTMAS at Blumenhof

old van

SAVING CHRISTMAS at Blumenhof

A VERY BAD THING happened on November 4, 2018:  we sold the very last bottle of our most popular wine, La Charrette.

WE COULD SEE IT COMING, of course.  Day after day, this wine was flying out the door.  We knew it would eventually sell out, but we also knew that, with the heavy lifting of the harvest concluded, we could soon bottle more.

WHAT WE DIDN’T KNOW was that the winemaker had other plans.  He was nowhere to be found.  He didn’t check in.  He didn’t answer his phone.  We eventually heard from a reliable source that he was “vacationing” in Colorado.  All we knew for sure was that he wasn’t in the cellar bottling La Charrette.

DAYS TURNED INTO WEEKS and still no winemaker, no La Charrette.  What was going on?  Our fans were getting restless.  A few accused us of holding back.  Emails were less friendly and understanding.  Sales started falling off.  Staff morale was becoming uncharacteristically gloomy.  How would we get through the Holidays without La Charrette?

WE WERE ON THE BRINK OF DESPAIR (or at least desperation) when, just a few days ago, we saw a beat-up old minivan, rakishly adorned with a bug-encrusted rubber cactus-man impaled on the antenna, pull into the parking lot.  The driver got out, walked briskly into the winery, grumbled something or other, and then brushed past the sales counter and into the cellar, trailed by a faint whiff of incense.

IT WAS THE WINEMAKER returning to work—finally.  We didn’t see him again for quite a while and we’re not sure exactly what he was doing back in the cellar, but we assume he went to the vat marked “LA CHARRETTE,” hooked it up to the silver bottling thingy, and put some wine in bottles.  Whatever.  All we know is that this morning (December 20, 2018), we had La Charrette back on our shelves.  Hallelujah!

CHRISTMAS IS SAVED!

SPEAKING OF SAVING, now is a great time to save on the just-bottled La Charrette.  With our Holiday Case Discount of $100.00 (no, that is not a misprint), a bottle of La Charrette can be yours for just $7.32 (plus sales tax) when you purchase 12 bottles.  Our other wines receive the same $100.00 case discount, so you can mix and match wines any way you like.

IF YOU’RE NOT UP FOR 12 BOTTLES, you can take advantage of our Holiday Special Discount:  $10.00 off any purchase of $30.00 or more (only available for purchases made at the winery).  This discount applies to items in our Gift Shop as well as wine.

BEFORE WE LET YOU GO, we have a confession to make:  the story about the winemaker is not entirely factual, but it is mostly true.  Even more true is the moral of the story:  winemakers are weird—even their sisters say so.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

2018 Harvest Update and Oktoberfest Entertainment

We’re about half way through our 2018 harvest.  Over the past month, we’ve been busy picking our white varieties (Seyval, Vignoles, Rayon d’Or, Vidal, and Valvin Muscat).  So far it looks like a really outstanding year.  Yields are down slightly this year due to prolonged temperatures around -10 degrees Fahrenheit this past winter, but the hot, dry summer was fantastic for our grapes.  We thought we were going to have an enormous amount of rainfall from tropical storm Gordon earlier this month, but we luckily only had enough to soak the ground (and not enough to split open the berries still hanging on the vine).  It’s been an abnormally hot late August/September, which will likely lead to some fantastic wines from this vintage.

Our next harvest date is Wednesday, October 3rd – we’ll be picking and crushing the first red variety of the year, Chambourcin.  If you live nearby and want to see the first steps of the wine making process, please stop by and say hello – we’ll be just outside the winery (to the right of the building).  We hope to start crushing the grapes around 3 p.m. (date and time subject to change if the weather sours on us).

It starts with a BARE-CHESTED GUY…

Here’s a short story for you.

A bare-chested young guy is sipping an ice-cold drink on a blazing hot day in July while he surveys the scene in front of him.  He’s standing on a ledge that towers over a raging, boulder-strewn whitewater river.  Abruptly, he takes a deep breath and puts the drink down.

You know what happens next.

Thirty-one years ago this month—but really, it seems like yesterday—we took the plunge and opened the winery, the first in Warren County since Prohibition.  It was a well-calculated dive, we thought at the time.  After all, what could possibly go

wrong?

Well, where do we start?  We’ve been through the Great Floods of 1986 (our very first vintage), 1993, and 1995 (and many others that were near-Great); grapevine failures (especially 4 acres of Chardonel, but also several acres of Cayuga White, Léon Millot, Noiret, Villard Blanc, Villard Noir, and V-65.232); attacks by ravenous and relentless wildlife (birds, deer, and an ever-burgeoning population of grape-crazy raccoons); the recent explosion of parasitic “mock-wineries” (which excel only in deceptive and self-aggrandizing marketing, not in actual winemaking); and, most lamentably, the death of our co-founder, the much-loved Jim.

After all that, how can it be that we’re still here?

That’s another story.

It seems that, despite the aforementioned adversity and more than a few self-inflicted wounds, some things have gone

right:

our 30+-year-old vineyards continue to sustain us (in fact, under the supervision of our Heir Apparent, they are producing the best fruit we have ever had); because of that great fruit quality, we have been very fortunate in wine competitions (most recently, we were stunned to learn that our Cabernet Franc was awarded “Best of Class” at the prestigious Los Angeles International Wine Competition); our employees remain incredibly friendly and good-looking (the owner, as you may know, not so much); and most importantly, YOU have stood by us over all these years, through our missteps and setbacks—beyond any doubt, we simply cannot do this without you.

So now, we would like to propose a toast:  to all the years, to all the friends and loved ones, to all the lessons learned, and to you.  But we have to say, something feels wrong here.  Does a toast on paper really count?  Shouldn’t we be toasting at a cozy gathering, with great friends, great food, and abundant vino?  Therefore, please come visit us and allow us to do this right at our upcoming31st Anniversary Wine Dinner Menu

Phone 636-433-2245 to place your reservation.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU HERE!

MARCH MANIA Invades Dutzow

BlumenFriends,

We’ve nearly made it through another dark, gloomy, and bitterly cold winter.  We’ve enjoyed plenty of chilly, sunless days relaxing near the fireplace (and on the heated deck) with a warm mug of Mulled Wine.  It’s been lonely.  On snowy weekdays we’ve been known to howl, “where art thou?”

However, now it’s time for swift action – you must take up arms (and legs) and charge to Dutzow without hesitation!  MARCH MANIA is upon us!  That’s right – it’s the time of the year that ALL WINES are on sale for an INSANE $9.88 per bottle (in 12 bottle purchases).

MARCH MANIA LIMITS & OTHER FINE PRINT

(per order online/per case in person)

1 bottle Cabernet Sauvignon, 1 bottle Cabernet Franc, 6 bottles Original CYN, 6 bottles Valvin Muscat

Order online, via phone (800-419-2245), or in person at the winery!

For our friends outside the state of Missouri, please use our page on VinoShipper.

For online orders, MARCH MANIA pricing will be applied after you’ve added 12 bottles to your cart.  If you experience any issues, please call us at 800-419-2245, or send us an e-mail.

Orders shipped via UPS must be signed for by an adult 21 years of age or older.

THE REDS RETURN

Our newest vintage (2016) of Original CYN is available for tasting and sales now. Original CYN (named after the Cynthiana grape) is one of our most desired wines – it lashes you with smoke, smothers you with chocolate, and teases you with tantalizing raspberries.

$21.77 per bottle in single bottle purchases

The 2015 vintage of Cabernet Franc has released.  Without a doubt, our best Cabernet Franc to date.  Roasted red & green pepper, tobacco, dried fruit and a hint of vanilla.  Made entirely from grapes grown at our main vineyard, not far from the winery (in Treloar, Missouri).  The only Missouri Grown Cabernet Franc we know of.  Only 4 barrels produced.

$32.95 per bottle in single bottle purchases

HOLIDAY THERAPY at Blumenhof

Winery at Christmas

It’s almost Christmas—the most joyous time of the year!

But honestly, as you know, not always.  Or at least, not for everybody.  Some of us get a little down in the dumps.  It’s winter.  It’s cold.  It’s dark.

Of course, the dreaded Holiday Gloom can hit even the best of us.  Sometimes, after a flare-up, it will pass.  But if symptoms persist, we suggest our Four Step Group Therapy Program:

  1. Get a group together.
  2. Take your group on a lovely drive to Blumenhof.
  3. Apply liberal amounts of Mulled Wine (or any other wine, for that matter) until you experience relief.
  4. Repeat as needed.

A Lame Excuse for a Holiday Newsletter

Scientists tell us that some 66 million years ago, an asteroid (or maybe a comet) changed the world forever when it struck Planet Earth near the Yucatán Peninsula of present-day Mexico.  It was a bad day for dinosaurs, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and pterosaurs, all of which bit the dust as a result of this Earth-shattering collision.  Apparently, the same fate befell more than half the species in the world.  Fortunately, some plucky life forms managed to survive and flourish, which is why, at this exact moment in time, you are eyeballing this Lame Excuse for a Holiday Newsletter just before you crumple it up in disgust and throw it into the recycling bin swiftly tap the back/delete button.  It’s funny how things work out.

Or not.  With the phenomenal rise of internet sales, the last couple of decades have been pretty much the opposite of funny for many retailers, especially the so-called “brick-and-mortar” species (of which Blumenhof is a member).  The impact has been devastating.  Some are already extinct.  And yes, many more are expected to succumb to the same forces of natural selection that KO’d the once-thriving Famous-Barr, 905 Liquor, and Rossino’s Restaurant.  They couldn’t—or wouldn’t—compete.

Such is the way of the world, but is the world a better place without a Rossino’s?  Hardly.  It was not just the end of a business, but also of a uniquely intimate experience nobody will ever have again.  EVER.  It was quirky and romantic and memorable in a way that restaurants seldom are and that the merely efficient, impersonal internet can never be.  It had a je ne sais quoi that can come only from the human touch—and that, too often, we fully appreciate only when it’s gone.

This all-too-rare quality is what we strive to give you every day at Blumenhof.  But we have to admit that some days are better than others, so we’ll be striving a bit more merrily on Saturday, December 9when, in collaboration with the following like-minded producers and merchants, we will host our 3rdAnnual Kristkindl Markt here in Merry Olde Dutzow:

(in alphabetical order)

Kristkindl Markt at Blumenhof WineryKristkindl Markt is a holiday marketplace and festival that will offer hot food, adult beverages, live entertainment by STEVE LESLIE (2 – 5 p.m.), and even an appearance by SANTA CLAUS/KRIS KRINGLE/SAINT NICK.  As always, Blumenhof’s friendly and good-looking elves will be here to provide assistance and to pour generous servings of warm MULLED WINE (made with our Devil’s Den Red, naturally).  Admission is FREE.

By the way, we hold no illusions about changing the world—but we invite you to come out and have fun helping us try.

A Long Term Commitment

“The fundamental things apply as time goes by.”

Herman Hupfeld (1894-1951)

Dearest Customer,

This summer, we’ve been together for 30 years.  The time has really flown by, hasn’t it?  When we first met, there was some uncertainty, even doubt, but there was also a lot of passion.  Three decades later, despite some ups and downs, the feeling is still there—at least for us.

But we know it would be foolish to take you for granted.  After all, you’re hot (and not just because it’s August) and we know there are plenty of pretty players out there that will try anything to woo you.  Now the bad may want you, but we want you bad.  Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to offer you a

RENEWAL OF VOWS

We will always be true to you and to the things that brought us together:  Missouri-grown wines ALWAYS fermented, cellared, and bottled right here in Dutzow. Grape-to-glass—isn’t that the way it should be?

We will never cheat on you.  In recent years, it’s become more and more common to find two “wineries” in bed with each other.  It’s all undercover—and underhanded:  one makes the wine; the other has its labels slapped on the bottles and pretends to be the producer.  Believe it or not, such shocking behavior is not illegal (in Missouri, anyway).  But let’s call it what it really is:  a desperate, tawdry affair that should be a scandal.  We would never do that to you.

We will always try to keep things fresh and fun.  Free live entertainment every weekend.  Happy Hour on Friday afternoons.  Monthly specials.  Friendly and good-looking staff.  Delicious brats and other light fare from the grill (Saturdays and Sundays).  Even craft beer from local breweries.  And if that doesn’t keep the juices flowing, just remember that we’re always up for a little naughtiness whenever you’re in the mood—such as fooling around with exotic grapes (like our Rayon d’Or) or doing something totally uninhibited like allowing Vignoles to go through malolactic fermentation.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

On Monday, August 21st there will be a SOLAR ECLIPSE, and we’re in the path of TOTALITY – a small strip that crosses the United States where the moon will completely block the sun allowing observers to see the sun’s atmosphere.

Partial Eclipse: 11:48 AM – 2:43 PM (CDT)

Total Eclipse: 1:15 PM – 1:18 PM (CDT)

Length of Totality: 2 minutes, 21 seconds

Live music by MICHAEL SCHAERER (rock) from NOON – 3 p.m. We’ll have hot German-style food available at the grill, Eclipse glasses to protect your eyes, and of course Award-Winning, Locally-Grown wines to sip. FREE ADMISSION.

MARCH MAN!A ALERT

per bottle in 12 bottle purchases.

Our records indicate that it is time for your annual MARCH MAN!A checkup.  There is no reason to be  alarmed; this is a routine self-examination procedure:  all you have to do is check up on your supply of genuine Missouri Grape Products to determine whether you may be in danger of running dry.  Research has shown that such dryness, if untreated, may lead to “Enophile Dysfunction” (also known as E.D.).  This unfortunate condition often results in not only a loss of wine-loving friends, but also a nagging itch to ingest strange, alien beverages such as French wine or even beer!

To prevent the discomfort and embarrassment of E.D., we recommend that you make plans to visit Blumenhofconveniently open every day of the week–for a painless shot of MARCH MAN!AOr, if you prefer, we can ship soothing, therapeutic Missouri Grape Products directly to any destination in the following 36 states (and the District of Columbia) by visiting our partners at VinoShipper.com:

Alabama*, Alaska, Arizona, California*, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming

ATTENTION: Patients residing in the State of Missouri are eligible for $9.99 shipping (per box of 12 bottles) by visiting blumenhof.com/missouri-wine-shop or calling one of our friendly and good-looking staff members at (800) 419-2245.

Kristkindl Markt in Merry Olde Dutzow

Believe it or not, 2016 is Blumenhof’s 31st vintage.  Now, over those many years we’ve won our share of shiny medals, but we really can’t claim to be the shiny model of a success story–we’re still a smallish family-owned farm winery with limited production and distribution.  Nevertheless, we’re still here, doing what we love doing:  making the best wine we can from locally-grown grapes.

When we started making wine in 1986, most people seemed to think local was about as sexy as William Shatner in polyester double-knit.  Now, local is super-hot–think Margot Robbie in a bubble bath–or at least that’s what people like to say.  But as we like to say, talk is cheap.  What’s needed is a little more direct action.  So, in that spirit we’ve invited the following like-minded individuals–i.e., small, family-owned enterprises like Blumenhof–to join us in “going local” at our 2nd Annual Kristkindl Markt (here in Merry Olde Dutzow on Saturday, December 10):

(in alphabetical order)

  • AMANDA COPLING (artist)
  • BOURBON HONEY FARM (locally-produced honey)
  • CAFÉ MOSAIC (café, caterer)
  • FARM TO YOU MARKET (café, deli, grocery, locally-raised meats)
  • FERN & SYCAMORE (retailer of American-made products)
  • MK DESIGNS & PHOTOGRAPHY (handmade jewelry, photography)
  • MM HEAVY METAL (metal artwork)
  • PLUSH BOUTIQUE (fashion, home decor)
  • REPURPOSED WOODWORKING (handmade furniture)
  • ROBIN HULL (caricature artist)
  • RODRIGO PINEDA PHOTOGRAPHY (photography, photo booth)
  • RYAN SNIDER (handmade ceramics)
  • SAFE MAMA HEALTHY FAMILY (handmade jewelry, Poofy Organics products)

Despite the name, our Kristkindl Markt is really as much a holiday festival as a marketplace.  In addition to the producers and merchants above, we’ll have hot food, adult beverages, a photo booth, live entertainment by THE TALL POPPIES band (2 – 5 pm), and even an appearance by SANTA CLAUS.  As always, Blumenhof’s friendly and good-looking elves will be here to provide assistance and to pour generous servings of warm MULLED WINE (made with our Devil’s Den Red, of course).  In other words, we’ll have pretty much everything you want in a holiday festival–except the bubble bath.

Admission is FREE.

What’s New (and Delicious) on the New Wine Road

Highway 94 from Defiance to Dutzow Missouri Repaved

What’s New (and Delicious) on the New Wine Road

If you’ve taken a trip down Highway 94 the last few years you may have hit some bumps, maybe a pothole or two – rattling your collection of newly acquired Missouri wines (and perhaps shaking your nerves a bit too).

Thankfully, Highway 94 was upgraded this summer – from I-64/40 all the way to Dutzow, 94 is as smooth as a plump, ripe grape! The road has been resurfaced, significantly widened, rumble strips were added, and many more guard rails were installed. It’s like a brand new (and much safer) road – just in time for OKTOBERFEST!

  • OKTOBERFEST is Here!

NEW WINE & NEW GRAPE: Crimson Cabernet

Crimson Cabernet - Blumenhof Winery - Grapes grown near New Haven Missouri

A brand new wine has been released at the winery made from a promising new grape variety called Crimson Cabernet.  It’s a natural hybrid (not a GMO) bred by crossing Cynthiana (a.k.a. Norton) with Cabernet Sauvignon (which is itself a hybrid of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc). The grapes are grown at Sandy Ridge Vineyard by a grape grower we’ve known for years located just outside the town of New Haven, Missouri. Sandy Ridge Vineyard is located on a limestone shelf in the hills above the Missouri River bottom where the vines are exposed to an abundance of sun.

Aged briefly (6 months) in American oak barrels, our Crimson Cabernet shows characteristics of both its parent grapes – the firm backbone and structure of a Cabernet Sauvignon, and the smoky, spicy flavor of Cynthiana.  Only 7 barrels produced – it’s available in our Tasting Room every day or in our online shop while supplies last.

Vineyard Update

Harvest is here!  For the last month or so, we’ve been busy hauling in grapes from our vineyard – trying our best to pick on cool, dry days.  That hasn’t been a challenge in recent memory. We’ve lucked out with some very dry weather during harvest the past several years, but this year has been quite different. Selecting a date to pick has been difficult and much more important than most years.  Pick too early, and you’re stuck with grapes that aren’t very expressive with a lot of acidity and green flavor.  Pick too late and the grapes could burst open with a heavy rain, and then rot.

So far, we’ve picked and crushed all of our white varieties (Seyval Blanc, Vignoles, Valvin Muscat, Rayon d’Or, and Vidal Blanc) and we’ve managed to avoid any real issues.  Our grapes have arrived in good condition, and despite the cloudy/rainy days it seems like this year’s grapes are at least as ripe as they were last year (which was a pretty good year for wine grapes).

Now that we’re finally drying out a little, we’re ready to start picking our red varieties and you’re invited to come watch us crush them up and ask us questions.

Here’s our rough schedule (dates subject to change):
Chambourcin: October 6th
Cabernet Sauvignon: Week of October 10th
Cabernet Franc: Week of October 17th
Cynthiana: October 18th
Crimson Cabernet: October 16th or 23rd
Check out our Facebook page for more precise dates and times as we get closer to the above estimated harvest dates.

A REAL CHANGE: VERAISON

Chambourcin at Blumenhof Winery near Augusta, Missouri and Washington, Missouri - close to St. Louis

Have you been following the political news lately? It’s occurred to us that there some parallels between the political campaign and our vineyard right now.  While the two major political parties just had their conventions, our grapes are holding their own sort of “unification process” – veraison.

  • CHANGE (chānj) v. changed, chang•ing, chang•es  1. The mantra of politicians throughout a presidential election cycle: elect me and I’ll change everything (or nothing).  2. To make or become different: the color of the grapes are beginning to change.

Veraison marks the last leg of the ripening race for our grapes.  It’s when the berries begin to accumulate sugar, increase in size, decrease in harsh/vegetal character, increase in fruity aromas/flavors, and (most dramatically) CHANGE color.  It’s pretty amazing to watch – over the course of a couple of weeks the clusters transition from a green color to a gold (in the case of white varieties) or purple (in the case of red varieties).

However, this CHANGE is rarely smooth.  Some berries are reluctant to adjust, remaining green much longer than the average grape.  It’s a great time to spot the bunches of grapes that may not make the best wine. If a cluster of grapes stays green too long, we’ll toss them out to ensure unity (a.k.a. – more consistent ripening).

We’re excited that veraison is here!  It means there’s only a few more weeks until harvest begins, and we get to show you the fruit of our labor and how we make grapes CHANGE into wine. Like us on Facebook and make sure you see our posts (click here to learn how to do that) – we’ll be inviting you to come out and watch us crush, press, and start making wine at the end of August.

TWO CABS, NO WAITING at BLUMENHOF

Did you know that Cabernet Sauvignon is currently the most-planted wine grape in the world?  [Believe it or not, just a few years ago that honor was claimed by the Spanish white variety called Airén.  If you’ve never heard of it, you have lots of company.]  These days, almost everywhere red wine is grown (especially in warmer regions), you’ll find Cabernet in the vineyards.

Except in Missouri.  Wine has been grown here for more than 160 years but Cabernet has seldom been planted.  When it has been tried, it has almost always been abandoned in short order.  We used to wonder why.  Through the grapevine, we always heard that Cabernet could not survive the cold winters here and that, even if it did survive, the grapes would not ripen properly in our climate.  For Missouri, Cabernet seemed to be a “no-go.”

Then, about 8 years ago we visited the Virant Vineyard, which is located just 3 miles from Dutzow.  It was planted during a “mini grape boom” in the 1980s on a hill overlooking the Missouri River Valley.  At the top of the hill, we saw something surprising: a one-half acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon, still alive and apparently thriving at nearly 20 years old.  Well, “thriving” might be a slight exaggeration because these vines had been neglected and urgently needed some TLC.  But despite the neglect, amazingly, they were in decent shape.

After seeing those vines in the Virant Vineyard, we caught the Cabernet Bug.  We convinced the owners to make some changes in the vineyard and to sell us the fruit.  We researched clones, rootstocks, and cultural practices.  In 2009, we planted about an acre of Cabernet Sauvignon and its parent vine, Cabernet Franc, in our own vineyard.  We have since planted more of both Cabs.

And . . . we have waited.  As you probably know, results are slow in coming in the wine business.  Glaciers advance and retreat in a bigger hurry.  From the moment you decide to plant a grapevine, nearly a decade of your life can vanish before you see the resulting wine in your glass.  Patience is at a premium.

But now, as we approach the winery’s 29th Anniversary (on July 3), we are happy to say that the wait is over.  Eight years after we caught the Cabernet Bug, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are both included on our Wine List–although in fairly limited quantities.  They are also included in our upcoming

Award Winning Wines

A phrase that is thrown around a lot in the wine business is “Award Winning Winery.” At most establishments, it’s hard to tell what that means.  Awarded for what?  In some cases it’s food, Photo of Mark Blumenberg - Winemaker for Blumenhof Wineryother times it’s “cleanliness.”  That’s great and all, but how about the wine?

Some “wineries” in the neighborhood can’t tell you about awards they’ve received for their wines for a pretty simple reason – they don’t make any wine. As you know, all of our wine is made right here in Dutzow by the same guy that’s been making it for 30 years – Mark Blumenberg!

Recently, his wines have been awarded a heap of medals:

VINEYARD UPDATE

Cynthiana Blumenhof Winery 2016 Spring

Our Cynthiana block (planted in 1983) as of May 5th.

It’s a rarity to have great news from our vineyards this time of the year.  In recent years, May has been when we start to notice how bad the damage is from either an exceptionally cold winter, or from a late frost.  Luckily, this past winter was very mild and though we thought we may see a killing frost in April, we escaped unscathed!  The vines are healthy, and the young shoots are growing rapidly – every vineyard block looks to be in top shape!

Early signs point to a very good year – so far it appears to be a healthy crop and the National Weather Service is predicting a warm summer and fall with average rainfall. These predictions aren’t a crystal ball, but for now we’re pretty pleased with how 2016 is going in the field.

MArCh MAn!A Str!kes Aga!n

Remember the good ole days in Missouri Wine Country? You could count on being able to try wines without paying a fee.  Corkage fees were non-existent.  Wineries made wine.  It sure was weird.

Here at Blumenhof we’re still Old School. We make our own wine right here in Dutzow, and all of our wines are made from grapes grown in the surrounding area – a growing rarity.  According to this source, just one central Missouri winery is making wine for more than 30 of Missouri’s “wineries” (and this central Missouri winery isn’t the only winery producing wine for mock wineries).  Most of the mock wineries try to pass off these wines as their own, when it’s simply the same wine sold at 30-some other “wineries” repackaged with a different name.  To us, that seems a bit misleading (at best), and we would argue, it’s rather disrespectful.

We respect you and your pocketbook, not only by staying true to the definition of a winery*, but also by not nickling and diming you with various extraneous charges.  You’re welcome to bring a picnic basket jam-packed with food and water any time you visit us.  And from time to time we offer fantastic sales on our award-winning wines like:

Public Displays of Affection at Blumenhof

According to archaeologists, human beings have been making wine for at least 8,000 years–nearly as long as the presidential campaign season.  Over those ages, people discovered how to make palatable wine mainly through the process of trial and error.  Winemaking was more art than science.  These days, enology (the science of wine) plays a larger role in the process, but it seems that aesthetic sensibilities will always guide the production of something that is, as Hemingway wrote, “one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”

For those of us who grow it, produce it, and love it, wine is nearly as seductive and irresistible as a love affair.  What starts out as an innocent little infatuation suddenly, uncontrollably grows bigger and then forces itself on you.  You feel powerless to abstain.  There can be some awkwardness at first, but with experience all of the self-conscious, mechanical acts become more natural.  In time, you feel a gratifying sense of familiarity and reciprocity:  you grow it–and it grows on you.

As you can tell, we love what we do, but we occasionally get the feeling that we keep our passion too much to ourselves.  Maybe we should share.  So, in the next couple of weeks we intend to do just that.

vineyard pruning - treloar missouri

This Saturday (January 30), we invite you to join us in our vineyard here in Dutzow for a little PDA (Pruning Demonstration and Advice) among the vines.  Nothing too crazy.  We’ll just do what we have been doing for the last month, cutting the vines back to a balanced and manageable size, while trying to explain the process as we go along.  If you like, you can grab a glass of wine and ask questions on and off the subject.  The PDA will be from Noon to about 1:00 p.m. and is free of charge.

mo winery barrel tastingThe following Saturday (February 6), we are having a BARREL TASTING featuring the newest red wine on the block, our 2015 Crimson Cabernet (a dry varietal wine made from a cross of Cynthiana/Norton and Cabernet Sauvignon).  You’ll have a chance to taste samples of this promising young wine directly out of new and used Missouri oak barrels.  We’ll also have tank samples of our 2014 and 2015 vintages of Cynthiana for you to try.  Our cellar is pretty cozy, but we’ll try to accommodate as many tasters as possible.  Like the PDA, the barrel tasting will be from NOON to ABOUT 1:00 p.m. Unlike the PDA, the charge is $10 PER PERSON.  For reservations, call (800) 419-2245.

Lastly, we’re happy to be pairing with Chef Pat Long of Cafe Mosaic for our Valentine’s Dinner on Saturday, February 13th. Very few seats remain. To make a reservation, call us at 800 – 419 – 2245.  Details on the dinner can be found here.

RINGING (OR WOULD THAT BE “WRINGING?”) OUT 2015/Ringing In 2016

It’s been a soggy year.  A quick check of local weather records indicates that the Greater Dutzow Area has received about 60 inches of precipitation this year–almost 50% more than average.  Recently, torrential rains resulted in historic flooding that closed several major roads (SEE NOTE BELOW).

This calls to mind one of our favorite “old sayings” (we’re not certain it’s really very old, but it sure sounds old):

WATER SEPARATES THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD;
WINE UNITES US.

And so, as the waters recede here in Wine Country, and as we approach the New Year, we still fell a little damp as we pull off our waders and sit down and have a glass of wine with friends and loved ones.  It’s the end of the Holiday Season, but the Mulled Wine is as tasty as ever and, when served in an “official” Blumenhof Kristkindl Markt boot, still very much in fashion.

kristkindl markt boot blumenhof winery dutzow missouri

It’s also still fashionable to haul off a few cases of your favorites now during our HOLIDAY WINE SALE–all wines are now just $8.88 EACH in any case purchase (Valvin Muscat and Cabernet Sauvignon are limited to 6 bottles per case).

Tomorrow, for New Year’s Eve, we’ll have Happy Hour $3 Dr!nk Spec!als from 1 – 3 pm and live music by Mark Moebeck from 2 – 5 pm.  As you probably know, Mark is not only a great musician, he’s also a great entertainer with a terrific sense of humor.  Always a good time.

So why not unite with us?

NOTE BELOW:  As of December 30, the flood waters are going down and Highway 94 between Dutzow and Augusta is high and dry and open to traffic (however, 94 between Weldon Spring and Klondike Park is closed),  Highway 47, which connects Dutzow to Washington, is also open.  Highway TT, which heads north from Dutzow toward New Melle, Foristell, and Wentzville, is open as well.  The bottom line: all roads that are passable lead to Blumenhof.

A Whole Month of Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest in Münich runs from September 19th to October 4th this year.  If you were hoping to fly over the pond and experience the Old World Oktoberfest you may be out of luck.  Thankfully, the New World Oktoberfest in Dutzow (Missouri’s oldest German settlement) has just started.  Unlike Oktoberfest in Germany, ours will last the ENTIRE MONTH of October!
Oktoberfest Celebration at Blumenhof Winery

For most of you, we are a short car ride away (an hour drive from St. Louis and an hour and a half from Columbia, MO).  There’s no better time for a drive out to the country – leaves of trees and grapevines are beginning to transform from boring old green into vibrant oranges, yellows and reds.  It’s a spectacular show that happens once a year.  Unfortunately, it (like Münich’s Oktoberfest) will be over soon, so catch it while you can.

Handpicking Local, Having Some “Harmless Fun”

Handpicking Local

Having Some Harmless Fun

After a long, soggy, insufferably steamy summer, Wine Country is now beginning to dry out as the harvest season approaches.  Heading into the latter half of August, the days are still summery, but the nights have the cooler touch of fall–perfect weather for ripening wine grapes.  In our vineyards, the early-season varieties (especially Seyval and Vignoles) have turned from green to gold.  Harvest is just around the corner (stay tuned to our Facebook page for dates and times).  You can’t help but get excited.

Vignoles grapes ripening at Blumenhof Winery

Vignoles grapes ripening in Dutzow.

2015 will be our 30th vintage here at Blumenhof.  Every vintage has been different for us, but the feeling we have going in has always been the same.  After battling the elements through winter, spring, and summer, we feel relieved/grateful/elated/lucky/inspired as we get ready to harvest the fruit of our labor.

When we started the winery back in 1986, we picked all of our grapes by hand–in fact, it took a small army of hands.  Nowadays, with field labor being hard to come by, most of the grapes are picked by a machine that straddles the rows and vibrates the berries off the vines.  However, for various reasons the machine can’t safely pick about 3 acres of vines, so we pull on our boots and do it the old fashioned way.  Happily.

It’s not a complicated job.  You just reach into a sea of leaves, locate a grape cluster, find the stem (a.k.a. “peduncle”), cut the stem with a hook-shaped knife, and then put the grapes in a plastic box, or “lug.”  Repeat . . . and then repeat again thousands of times (depending on the grape variety, you can have more than 50,000 clusters per acre of grapes) until all the grapes are picked.  At the end of the day, you’re tired from the exertion but also satisfied with the completion of a job well done.  For a winemaker, getting out of the cellar and picking grapes is like the “harmless fun” Mark Twain wrote about:  “it tones a body up and keeps him human and prevents him from souring.”  Needless to say, a sour winemaker is no fun at all.

Handpicking grapes isn’t for everyone but, in a very real sense, everyone does it when they handpick a bottle of wine.  For example, when you purchase a bottle of French wine, you’re really picking the French grapes that made the wine.  That’s good for France.  We think the same reasoning applies to Missouri wine.  That is, handpicking a bottle of Missouri wine is good for Missouri (not to mention also harmless fun for you).  But there is this IMPORTANT CAVEAT:  you have to make sure the bottle contains wine from grapes that were grown and picked in Missouri.  You can only be certain of this if the word “Missouri” (or some other, more specific, place of origin in Missouri) appears on the front label.

You don’t have to inspect labels here at Blumenhof, but you are more than welcome to do so if you like.  That’s because every bottle we sell proudly proclaims “MISSOURI” on the label.  Missouri-grown wine is all we make.  Missouri-grown wine is all we have ever made for 29 vintages and counting.  And obviously, we are able to do this ONLY because you have handpicked our wines.

So please, keep up the good work–and have some fun.

28 Years of Missouri Wine

It’s our 28th anniversary here at Blumenhof Winery, as good a time as any to take a look back–and a better time to look forward.

In the year we opened, 1987, there were a handful of wineries in Missouri.  At the time, Blumenhof was just the third winery along this Weldon Spring-to-Marthasville stretch of Highway 94, a.k.a. “Missouri’s Wine Road.”  The first one, of course, was the historic Mount Pleasant Winery, which was established by George Muench in 1859, closed as a result of Prohibition in 1920, and reopened under the ownership of Lucian Dressel in the late 1960s.  The second, Montelle Winery, was started by Clayton Byers in a farmhouse on Augusta Bottom Road in the early 1970s.  A few years later, and seven miles farther west, Blumenhof was born.  And that, dear reader, was the sum and substance of the “Missouri Wine Industry” around here 28 years ago.

Blumenhof Winery in the 1980’s

In those days, wineries were simple places.  Some might say boring.  They were places where wine was made and sold.  That’s all there was to it.  Wine was the be-all and the end-all.  All of us were trying, against difficult conditions and daunting odds, to make great wine from grapes grown in local vineyards.  We were passionate.  We were committed.  And most people we knew outside the industry thought we were completely crazy.

Looking back, it seems pretty certain that we were out of our minds–or just plain naive.  Eventually, clever business types saw things differently.  Like, really, making locally-grown wine?  This ain’t exactly California, ya know.  Forget about making wine.  What about making some money?  Why buy land for grapevines that will only bring stress and struggle?  Why invest in specialized, expensive equipment that has limited use and no resale value?  There has to be an easier way to make a buck.

These days, the entrepreneurs are having a field day in Missouri Wine Country.  Instead of planting vines, they plant ideas and visions.  It’s really all about the show–and if they do plant a few vines, it will be strictly for show.  Well, this is the Show-Me State, isn’t it?  Meanwhile, the wine can come from anywhere.  There are plenty of places that will make the wine for you, bottled and ready to sell with your own label on it.  No muss, no fuss, and, as con artists always like to point out, it’s all perfectly legal.  Local wine?  Missouri-grown wine?  Too risky, too much work, and anyway, who cares?  People just want to get drunk.  They’re not going to read the fine print on a label.  Let the dreamers make local wine.

Here at Blumenhof, we’re still living the dream.  Or we’re dreaming the life.  You decide.  And the truth is, when you choose Blumenhof–or, we hasten to add, one of the dwindling number of other dedicated local wine producers–you are deciding to make a crucial investment in Dreamland.  We can only continue doing what we love with your support.

February Wine of the Month

The arrival of February brings us many joys. We have the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, the arrival of Spring Training (if the snow in Florida melts in time), and a new Wine of the Month, Valvin Muscat.

An alluring floral bouquet of orange blossoms and honeysuckle combine with seductive citrus and tree fruit flavors of apricot and mango to make Valvin Muscat a sensual knockout. Blumenhof’s Valvin Muscat is well-awarded at wine competitions, taking best of show and best of class in both domestic and international events.  Give your Valentine a bottle of Valvin Muscat to enjoy with some white chocolate dipped strawberries by the fireside.  Valvin Muscat will go on Spring Break in March (won’t be available), so come in today to make sure you get one.

Custom-made Gift Baskets for Valentine’s Day can be put together in a very reasonable price range. Wine, chocolates, cookies and other goodies can be packed into these eye-catching gifts. We also have a nice selection of stained glass hearts from Stained Glass by Sherry.

Blumenhof Winery is a small, family-farm winery, dedicated to crafting wines solely from locally-grown Missouri grapes. Three generations of the Blumenberg family have been involved in growing and making our Award-Winning wines since 1979.
